Welcome to Discover Natchez .com - An Unofficial Visitors Guide to Natchez, Mississippi

Natchez is one of Mississippi's oldest European-American cities, founded by French colonists in 1716. The city was instrumental in the development of the South, as it is strategically located on the Mississippi River. It is believed that indigenous peoples lived in the area since the 8th century, and archeological evidence shows that the "three mounds" were constructed by 1200 AD.

In 1716 the French founded Fort Rosalie to protect the trading post established in the Natchez territory two years prior.

Road Trip to Natchez, MS: Downtown Natchez

In the late 18th century, Natchez was the starting point of the Natchez Trace overland route, which ran from Natchez to Nashville. Produce and goods were transported on the Mississippi River by the boatmen, who usually sold their wares at Natchez or New Orleans.

During the Civil War, Natchez saw little damage. Natchez was surrendered to Flag-Officer David G. Farragut after the fall of New Orleans in May 1862.

Today, Natchez is a beautiful and historic town. The architecture is fantastic to see and has been used by Hollywood as the backdrop for feature films. The food in Natchez is fantastic and you will want to attend the Natchez Food & Wine Festival to see.

And, most of all, the people of Natchez still have that welcoming Southern hospitality.
