to Natchez, Mississippi
Natchez is one of Mississippi's
oldest European-American cities, founded by French colonists in
1716. The city was instrumental in the development of the South,
as it is strategically located on the Mississippi River. It is believed
that indigenous peoples lived in the area since the 8th century,
and archeological evidence shows that the "three mounds"
were constructed by 1200 AD.
In 1716 the French founded Fort Rosalie to protect
the trading post established in the Natchez territory two years
prior.

In the late 18th century, Natchez was
the starting point of the Natchez Trace overland route, which ran
from Natchez to Nashville. Produce and goods were transported on
the Mississippi River by the boatmen, who usually sold their wares
at Natchez or New Orleans.
During the Civil War, Natchez saw little damage. Natchez
was surrendered to Flag-Officer David G. Farragut after the fall
of New Orleans in May 1862.
Today, Natchez is a beautiful and historic
town. The architecture is fantastic to see and has been used by
Hollywood as the backdrop for feature films. The food in Natchez
is fantastic and you will want to attend the Natchez
Food & Wine Festival to see.
And, most of all, the people of Natchez still have
that welcoming Southern hospitality.
